I prefer to use a program such as Windows Live Mail or Outlook to access email instead of web based email programs that may have advertising content. If you do use one of these programs, you will need to back up your contacts manually. You can avoid this by keeping a carbon copy of your contacts in a web based account for example GMAIL. This way you will always have access to your contacts regardless of where you are and if you later start using a smartphone or tablet, your contacts are easily imported and synchronized with that device.
