There is not as much maintenance required on computers today as there used to be. The fact that computers have a lot more memory and larger hard disks, take away some of the past maintenance issues that we use to have to perform. Most computer software issues are caused by the user however some hardware issues may not be. The dreaded blue screen error messages can be a potential problem if not resolved quickly and you are having to do consistent shut downs with the power button.

DELETING TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES
This is not as critical as it used to be especially if you are not having issues with limited hard disk space. You may want to do it once or twice a year. If you are having problems accessing a website or it seems that your browsing is slowing down, deleting these files may fix the problem.

DEFRAGMENTING HARD DISK
This is not a "fix all" for a slow computer and you may not notice a difference at all if you run it. A single file can be written across multiple areas on a hard disk drive. If the file is fragmented, the hard drive heads must move back and forth to read or write each portion of the file. Defragging, on the other hand, puts related files in a close proximity so the files can be accessed more efficiently.

SHOULD I TURN THE COMPUTER OFF?
My opinion is yes! Computer boot up time is an indication of how the computer is running. By turning the computer off at night will free up memory and you will see a noticable difference. Hard drives only have a limited life expectancy before they will fail. If you leave the computer on all of the time, you are decreasing that life expectancy.
